When I signed up for a course to learn bamboo massage I really was not sure what I was getting myself into or how useful the technique would be on a day to day basis. The instructor promised to change my career with the class which is a pretty bold statement!
Before taking the course I had many questions from clients including : What would you use the bamboo for? How would it feel? Would it hurt? Is it a routine that will be applied to every client? All fair questions, that I could only answer with shrugs because I had no idea. Having completed my course I feel more confident answering and giving my honest opinion.
What would the bamboo be used for?
The bamboo is warmed in my treatment room and used as an extension of my hands to massage. Nearly everything I can do with my hands can be done with one of the bamboo sticks. There are a variety of lengths, diameters and even some half cylinder sticks allowing me to change my choice of bamboo depending on the goal of treatment and client comfort and pain tolerance.
How does it feel?
Is heavenly a technical answer? Probably not. Because the bamboo is warmed I found the technique very comforting, in my opinion you can’t beat heat to start relaxing into a treatment. The bamboo has been sanded repeatedly so that it is smooth to the touch and I use lotion or oil throughout the treatment so that the bamboo moves easily against skin. The sticks allow me to work deeper into muscles than I can do with my thumbs or elbows so there is also more opportunity to work within a comfortable pain level to alleviate chronic muscle pains.
Would it hurt?
The heat should never be painful but as with hot stone massage I encourage clients to speak up if something is uncomfortable. Working deeply can feel sharp or painful but I always encourage lots of client communication throughout the appointment so that I am never forcing you to breathe through too much pain. It’s important to speak honestly throughout the appointment so that we are altering pressure and temperature to keep your massage enjoyable and relaxing.
Is it the same routine for every client?
No. Because the sticks are simply an extension of my hands we do not need to stick to a routine for your appointments. As is typical for registered massage therapy appointments we will complete a discussion and assessment during the first few minutes of your appointment and decide on our treatment goal and plan. I will only work on the areas we decide on and I will alter pressure and timing as needed to make the appointment successful for you.
How can I try bamboo massage?
Because I love the bamboo massage results so much I have made the decision that I will be incorporating them whenever needed. I will have them available and warmed for each appointment and we can decide in the interview portion of your appointment if you’d like to try them. Depending on your preference and treatment goals we may use the bamboo one day but not another, we may use them for your elbow tendinitis but not for your neck and shoulder treatment, we may just use them to warm you up on a snowy day! There is no added cost for bamboo and we will work together to decide when it will be beneficial to incorporate into your treatment plan.
