When I started my career I purchased a lotion that I had used in school, assuming that the school would set us up with great products. Two years into working I noticed some hand and forearm aches but figured that was just part of being a massage therapist. I worked using my whole body so I made sure I did lots of self-care, stretches and went for my own massages. It helped but the aches were ALWAYS there.
Around the same time I began to notice the achiness I started chatting with two other business women in town – Ginny van Veghel from friggin’ lip balm and Laura Fockler from Spa de Vie. Both women were extremely committed to using high quality, natural ingredients in their businesses and shared this passion for treating skin well with me. Inspired by their love for excellent products and terrified by the amount of ingredients I didn’t recognize on my lotions’ ingredient list, I approached Ginny about making a massage lotion for me to use for my clients.
If you don’t know Ginny, you need to know that she is a genius and completely rocks when it comes to making body care products. Within about a week, she whipped up a small batch of lotion for me to try. Massage lotions are a bit different than personal moisturizers – they have to have more glide or else I would go through gallons in every one hour session. I tried Ginny’s lotion and I loved working with it. It had great glide, no scent, no nuts, no gluten, no dairy; no fake ingredients! I immediately ordered more but since I waited until the last minute and it was a custom product, I had to switch back to my old lotion for a couple of weeks.
The first day I used my old lotion after testing Ginny’s creation I was shocked to discover my arms were aching. As is typical for pain, I hadn’t remarked on the lack of pain while using Ginny’s lotion, I just went about my day, enjoying the new lotion and loving life. But when I went back to my old lotion I REALLY noticed the difference. The whole time I used my old lotion I noticed pain in my arms and hands. Ginny, being the great person she is, put a rush on making me more lotion and I’ve been pain free since! It was remarkable and definitely convinced me that I needed to be more careful with the products I was using. I still use Ginny’s lotion for most of my treatments and I love knowing that I can recite a short list of ingredients that anyone will recognize.
Although I LOVE this lotion, it isn’t suitable for hot stone treatments. I need to use oil for this type of massage but my experience convinced me to switch to whole ingredient products for this too. I now use either coconut oil or Emminence Apricot Body Oil from Spa de Vie in Uxbridge.
